Idjut Boys Article

Idjut Boys speak to Peter Herbst, (aka Dr.Disk - Copenhagen,Denmark), at Copenhagen s most prolific House Club - Club Mantra.

Dan and Conrad formed The Idjut Boys around six years ago but they ve been idiots long before that so they didn t pick the name, it was the other way around. It all started with an obsessive musical interest which has taken a natural progression into their livelihood. They began as DJs organizing their own parties in London. They then started to use the money they got from the parties to make their own music and that is how the U-Star label was born. U-Star has been running for almost six years now but the last year they haven t been as productive but there came a 7 inch recently and there is an album on they way alongside a Joe Clausell remix of an old track they did with Faze Action. The track was originally made back in 1996 but the remix was never released but it should be out just before Christmas. They also run the Disfunction label where the current release is Two Songs For Annie by the very talented Erot from Norway. Apart from that they also do occasional remixes but they try to focus on doing their own stuff first. Early this year they put out Life-The Shoening That Fits You on Glasgow Underground, an album they made with Quakerman. The tunes on the album are very deep and dubby with an occasional disco-loop or two. Conrad explains: "we re into the disco dub sound of New York and I guess those influences have to come out in what we do" and Dan adds " and we re also quiet into comedy or quiet into a laugh and that was also an idea for that album". And it was certainly they boys who had the last laugh when the album came out because it wasn t at all what people had expected."People had expected us to produce very musical stuff, very live and jazzy and the album was pretty much the opposite and that was great fun to do that because people were very surprised ... and hopefully the next one will surprise them too" says Conrad. But the boys were also surprised themselves because the album has done far more than they even imagined thanks to the efforts of label boss Kevin McKay who put the album out even though it hadn t the traditional Glasgow Underground sound to it."That s another feather in Kevins cap because he s prepared to go kind of all over the place" says Conrad adding "he s going from strength to strength"- no doubt about that. When their not working on their music they travel all over the world djing. They prefer to play abroad because the British underground scene is in dire straits. Apart from Kenny Hawkes Space night at Bar Rumba their isn t much going on according to the boys unless you re into trance.

And fortunately for the guys the rest of the world likes to hear them play and apart from Copenhagen and the rest of Scandinavia they ve been to the westcoast of America as well as Scotland and Ireland. In all these places people seems to be more musical aware and appreciate good music so the boys like to go there

.I walk the boys to the stage where resident dj Mr.Kong is almost through with his set. Conrad takes the first shift at the turntables and takes the crowd on a musical journey which Dan eventually takes over and adds a new twist to it. They certainly have their own individual style and taste so the crowd is in for a treat. After a couple of hours working my joints on the dancefloor my feet surrenders and I have to head home but what a night. Be sure not to miss the boys if they re in your town - there awesome.

Thanks to Peter for conducting this interviews/article with the boys.deephousenetwork
