Q-Burns Abstract Message Facts and Figures:
- Q-Burns Abstract Message, AKA M. Donaldson, is a self-described DJ
who plays "music for drinking and dancing, in that order". To us it
sounds like twisted funky house with the occasional Clash record
thrown in for kicks.
- As a producer, he's dabbled in all sorts of styles but keep
everything tied together with the funk rope. Recent albums include"
Invisible Airline" and "Feng Shui" on Astralwerks and "Re-Routed" on
Eighth Dimension. The latter contains remixes by Q-Burns pals King
Britt, Hakan Lidbo, Funky Transport and Neon Heights.
- Has done a few dozen remixes for a host of diverse artists
including, most recently, Robbie Hardkiss on Classic, Weekend
Players, and PC Synergy. His rare Britney Spears meets Basic Channel
mix is a bizarre treat if you can find it ...
- Q-Burns is on a perpetual world tour and is supposedly the first
American DJ (or musician) to ever play in Siberia. He makes regular
stops in places like Paris, Edinburgh, Moscow, Barcelona, and Bogota
... and he still loves playing 100-person bars in tiny towns.
- Among Donaldson's major influences are such non-house acts as My
Bloody Valentine, 70's Krautrock, Marvin Gaye, The Minutemen, 50's
doo-wop soul, The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds", and Public Enemy.
- Q-Burns likes watching artsy movies, hanging out with cats,
drinking vodka, fantasizing about the defeat of Bush in '04, and
eating exotic vegetarian meals.
- Everyone thinks he's from San Francisco but he just spends a lot of
time there (it's his favorite city). Currently Q-Burns Abstract
Message is based in Orlando, Florida which has a great airport.
- He's insisted that there is no "Q-Burns" ... that "Q-Burns Abstract
Message" is the name of an imaginary band, sort of like how there
really is no "Sgt. Pepper". We feel he's a bit on the looney side
with this one.
